Welcome to our website! We are pleased that you are interested in an exchange visit to the field of Gender Studies at the Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB).
Gender Studies at RUB understands itself as interdisciplinary and international, which is why the exchange between students and lecturers from different countries plays an important role in our teaching and research. We, the Gender Studies Coordination Office, are committed to enabling our foreign (exchange) students to have an educational and exciting stay abroad at the Ruhr-University Bochum. Therefore, we offer our students a diverse range of courses, mainly from Social Sciences, Philology (especially Media Studies) and History. With the Marie Jahoda Center for International Gender Studies (MaJaC), founded in 2019, an inter-faculty institution for Gender Studies has been established at RUB, which coordinates the Gender Studies study programmes and is dedicated to promoting research (Gender Lab) and knowledge transfer (Gender in Society) in the field of Gender Studies. Thus, international students have the opportunity to gain new perspectives on the subject of Gender Studies and to establish lifelong networks with us.
As a post-industrial city whose social structure and architecture are very much shaped by coal mining, Bochum has developed into one of the most important research locations in Germany in recent decades. With more than 42,000 students from over 130 countries, the RUB is one of the ten largest universities in Germany and, with over 50 percent, has one of the highest proportions of first-generation students in Germany. It is also important to us in Gender Studies to promote the academic careers of all students, regardless of social background, through our diverse counselling services and to benefit from the cultural diversity of our student body. The university's location in the Ruhr metropolitan region enables close geographical and academic networking with other research locations. With the NRW Semester Ticket, RUB students and staff have the opportunity to flexibly explore the Ruhr region or the entire state of North-Rhine-Westphalia by public transport.
An exciting time awaits you with many new experiences, challenges and opportunities. In order to support you as best as possible during your stay, we are happy to assist you through the following advisory services:
