She wrote her Bachelor's thesis on the topic of "Prejudice and Discrimination against Sinti*zze and Roma*nja in the European Union", in which she traced the historical lines of development and the current manifestations of this form of discrimination and examined the emergence, maintenance and reproduction of prejudiced and racist thinking from a (social) psychological perspective among other things.

Marie Bußmann completed her master's degree in social sciences at the Ruhr University Bochum in the study program "Culture and Person" in order to deepen her knowledge of analytical concepts from the fields of social and cultural psychology and sociology.

During her studies Marie Bußmann worked for several years in the fields of open child and youth work as well as anti-discrimination and empowerment work. After her studies she worked for two years in counseling centers for people with migration and refugee histories. Since November 2020 she has been working on her doctorate at the Chair of Social Theory and Social Psychology at the Ruhr University Bochum, where she has been employed as a research assistant since December 2021.

Furthermore, since October 2021 she is a member of the research group "Affective Sociality", which deals with sociological, cultural psychological and psychoanalytical perspectives on affects and emotions and is affiliated with the Hans Kilian and Lotte Köhler Center. In her doctoral project Marie Bußmann builds on preliminary work from her master's thesis by pursuing her research interest in civilian sea rescue in the European border regime.

The aim of the study is to determine which, if any, changing motives, intentions, expectations, and experiences have guided the actions of the committed subjects in civilian sea rescue in the European border regime over time and which individual and sociocultural attributions of meaning and significance go hand in hand with this. This requires both a consideration of the constantly changing lifeworlds and personal identities (in the sense of Straub 2019's concept of narrative identity) of those engaged, as well as the ever-changing societal and sociocultural frameworks in which volunteering is also embedded.

Her research and interests focus on social and cultural psychology, (critical) migration and border regime research, engagement research, political theories such as theories of democracy, and the methodologies and methods of qualitative/interpretative research.
